Fashion Layering Tips: What To Wear To The Movies

Fashion layering tipsLayering your clothes is not only a comfortable way to show off your fashion sense, it’s also very ‘in’ at the moment. At Lotus Online Boutique, we believe in keeping up with the latest fashion trends; helping our customers stay in touch with what’s happening right now. However, we all need a little bit of help at times, which brings us to offering important fashion layering tips; especially when going to the movies.

Taking into consideration that it’s often quite chilly in the cinema, you want to ensure that you not only look fashionable, but that you also feel comfortable and toasty whilst enjoying a good movie. After all, there’s probably nothing worse than wanting to enjoy the one movie you’ve been waiting to watch, only to freeze your way through it; or worse, look as if you threw on just about everything in your closet in the hopes of feeling comfortable.

When it comes to layering your clothes for an important movie date, keep in mind the following fashion layering tips – straight from the experts!

1. Start with a plain canvas

Your first layer should always consist of a plain color; especially if you’re adding an extra two layers on top of it. The last thing you want is to create a look that’s too busy and confusing. It’s also important to keep in mind that you should preferably add different textures together; starting with a layer that’s easy to pair other materials with.

 2. Accentuate the color with a soft texture

It’s always quite pretty adding a second, soft textured layer on a cold day. Depending on the color of your first layer, your second layer should complement it. If you’re wearing a lighter first layer, make the second layer’s color pop by choosing a darker version of the first layer. Makes sense? The key to layering like a pro is choosing different variations of the same color; instead of adding a few different colors together. It’ll do your look absolutely no justice.

3. Add a plain jacket/coat

Once you’ve added a soft texture over the first layer, you can then chose a fashionable utility jacket or coat to add to your comfort. It’s important to keep this layer as plain as possible not to take away the texture or pattern of the previous layer. If not, your entire look may come off as a bit busy and too distracting. Always take into consideration that this particular layer needs to consist of a different fabric texture. Too much of one thing is never attractive.

4. Never forget your scarf (in colder weather)

Add the frosting on the cake by incorporating a warm scarf. With so many texture choices and color options, it’s important to match the colors of your chosen scarf to your outfit colors. In order to spice up your outfit and add a little bit of class and sophistication to your look, you could always add a fluffy faux fur scarf around your neck. Matching gloves would be perfect, but not an outfit ruiner if you can’t find any.

5. Always choose a fitted first layer

Layering has a tendency to make you look a little bit bulkier; especially if you choose quite loose clothing options. The key to preventing that is by choosing a fitted first layer in order to accentuate your curves. Remember, layering is there to add depth to your outfit and create a sense of comfort; regardless of the occasion. Choose a fitted first layer in order to pair semi-loose clothing items for the other layers.

6. Add a belt around your waist (for a slimming effect)

If you are a little bit self-conscious about your waist but you still want to incorporate the fashion layering look into your style, add a belt around your waist; preferably over the second layer. Remember, the first layer will be quite fitted whilst the second layer may consist of a pretty cardigan. Add a belt around the smallest part of your waist in order to prevent the cardigan from adding more cushioning than necessary.

7. Don’t be afraid to play with texture

The great thing about layering your clothing is the fact that you can and should experiment with different material textures in order to create depth in your look. Add cotton dress to a little bit of fluff in the form of a scarf; paired with a waistcoat and perhaps leather over the knee boots. It’ll make your outfit come across as more interesting and accentuate certain areas whilst hiding others. Give it a try!

8. Remember to add matching accessories

No outfit is complete without the necessary fashion accessories for women. Of course, there is a limit to how many accessories you should be wearing; regardless of whether you decide to incorporate layering into your fashion choices or not. It’s important to keep your personality in mind. Some women prefer bold statements, while other tend to lean more towards the softer, gentler side of life. Whichever you prefer, remember to keep the bling for an evening occasion and add more sophisticated accessories for the daytime.

9. Hide buttons with a cardigan

If you have any unsightly buttons that need to be covered up, why not add a pretty cardigan to provide the desired layered look? This outfit choice works particularly well in a corporate office setting; seeing as you do need to look professional while still coming across as feminine. The great thing about adding a cardigan over a button up blouse is the fact that you can transition straight from an office look to a fun movie date setting. All you need is a warm jacket or coat to add to your layers and you’re all set!

10. Avoid layering the same fabric textures

The last thing you want to do is wear the same material textures for every layer. Not only will it create absolutely no depth, you’ll also be left with a look that makes you look quite frumpy. Layering needs to be done right in order to achieve the objective of layering in the first place, so avoid choosing the same materials for every layer to prevent your ‘unwanted’ bits from showing more than you’d like.

Layering may sound complicated, but it’s actually quite simple once you know how to put certain textures of fabric together. Remember, the correct layering techniques can make your waist seem just as slim, so don’t ever think you’ll look ‘fat’ if you decide to jump on the layering train. It’s a great way to mix and match your outfits by simply matching various pieces of clothing in order to give you a fresh new look each day.
